Rosin is the gold standard of smoked/vaporized cannabis. By extracting a flower’s resin with heat and pressure, the strain’s full range of cannabinoids and terpenes are preserved without the use of hydrocarbons, while the inactive plant matter is subtracted discarded. When this “rosin” is vaporized, the strain’s cannabinoids and terpenes are not destroyed by combustion, nor do the lungs have to metabolize burnt vegetable matter, as is the case when flower is smoked in the traditional way. This makes rosin extraction and vaporization the most healthy and true route from flower to consciousness.
To press Rosin at home without an expensive rosin press, you will need the following items:
Hair Straightener (cheap, low temperature, or expensive with variable temperature)
Container (glass or plastic)
Dried Cannabis Flower (opt for a high-resin strain. Indicas are usually easier)
Wax Paper (from a dispensary or grocery store)
Dabbing Tool (dab rig, e-pen, or nectar collector)
The process is actually surprisingly simple.
Start by turning on your hair straightener. Let it heat up to the lowest setting, usually about 200 degrees. if your straightener does not have a temperature display, that is okay. Put it on “low” or “on.”
Next, fold a 4″x4″ square of wax paper in half to form a V shape.
Now place 1 gram of dried cannabis bud in the V. It works best if you use one large bud as opposed to many smaller nuggets.
Once your straightener has heated up, lay it sideways on a flat surface, such as a counter or table.
Place the wax paper filled with flower between the two ceramic plates.
Press and squeeze the cannabis for 8-10 seconds. You should hear a slight sizzling/bubbling sound. If the flower starts to vaporize, try to breathe in the vapor and get a little high. (Just kidding-this shouldn’t happen unless your hair straightener is way too hot. If your flower is vaporizing from the heat, try putting a few more layers of wax paper between the ceramic plates and the flower.
Once you have pressed it, voila. You should have a small amount of rosin stuck to your wax paper. The ratio of rosin to dried flower is usually 1:5. You can use your leftover flower in cooking or baking now since it should still contain some cannabinoids and terpenes.
This is a quick, do-it-yourself method to collecting small amounts of rosin. It is not recommended that you do this with large amounts of flower since the method is fairly inefficient. This method is best for trying out rosin prior to investing in a proper machine. If you decide after trying this that you really like vaporizing rosin, then you should invest your money into a better rosin press, since you can press much more at a time and your yields will be much higher doing it that way.
As always, thanks for reading! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below, and come into the store and ask our friendly budtenders about their favorite strains and extraction methods.
