Getting high on campus is less straightforward but more rewarding than you might think. If there is any public space in Vancouver where you should get high, it’s probably the urban rainforest that is UBC. Depending on the particular circumstance, lighting a joint can be more or less contentious than you’re comfortable with. If you’re like me, a twenty-something-year-old woman looking relatively put together with somewhere to be, getting high and being high are almost inconsequential. If you are still on the cusp of fully embracing the experience of being stoned in public, you may want to be more conscientious of where and how you go about this. If you find yourself in the latter category, the rose garden, with its view of the mountains and atmospheric solace, may be a desirable location to smoke up.
The Rose Garden
The rose garden is relatively quiet and is the only place on campus where flowers outnumber students. If you walk into the forest to the west of the panoptic garden, there is a spot with a few rocks organized in a circle. This, I will disclose, is location #1 for getting high at UBC. Assuming you have time set aside to sit down and let time escape you, another viable option is Wreck Beach. Getting high by the beach is so iconic there is really little else to say. However, please know that to exit Wreck beach requires the climb of 500 stairs…so with the awareness that weed tends to amplify feelings and experiences, know that reaching the top will certainly be climatic and may also be a little painful for your (stoner) lungs.

Before your Commute
Maybe you don’t have much time but you would prefer to be high than not high for your 9:30am lecture on Jacques Derrida. You have several options. The first is that you could smoke before you leave home but this would involve an hour commute amongst the dense assemblage of Vancouver’s population. In this scenario, unexpected observations and emotions may come flooding in, which, depending on who you are, may sound intriguing or terrifying. So perhaps this should be reserved for high-level stoner-types.
Another stealthy public maneuver is to smoke in the parking lot behind the Chemistry building or near the back doors of the Nest. Of course, it’s unlikely that any one individual would single you out for smoking a joint while you walk to class down Main Mall, but the attention is understandably undesirable. I think you should just get in the habit of smoking in the open. Fill UBC with as much marijuana smoke as tobacco, create a spectacle, normalize the behavior, and declare your alignment with the 2018 legalization agenda.
